Bilingual Catechism in Spanish and Timucuan
In 1594 Francisco Pareja, a Franciscan friar and writer, was assigned to the missions in Florida among the Timucuan peoples, where he applied himself to studying their life, the language, and dialects. He stayed until 1610, when he left for Mexico and began his work on writing catechisms, grammars, and a confessionario, to help the Indians understand the meaning of confession. This work, a rare bilingual catechism in Spanish and Timucuan, was especially useful to missionaries in explaining Christian doctrine to the native people.
