About this item

Many republican writers from Great Britain—some convicted of sedition—were read and admired in the American colonies. Chief among them was Algernon Sidney (1611–1683), a republican executed for seditious writings, including his Discourse Concerning Government. Sidney wrote "Government is not instituted for the good of the governor, but of the governed." Thomas Jefferson considered Sidney’s book the best fundamental textbook on the principles of government.
